High Five & Kindergarten:

The first day of school for all High-5 and Kindergarten students is Wednesday, August 30, 2017.

In the coming weeks you will receive information from your child’s assigned school about the registration process for the upcoming 2017-18 school year. Most schools will host a Kindergarten and High-Five registration day in early May. In order to enroll your child, please be prepared to present the following documents to the school:

  • Record of birth date: Birth certificate, passport, baptismal record or other official document.
  • Record of immunizations: Call HotShots at 612.668.0870 for an appointment.
  • Copy of Early Childhood Screening: If your child has not been screened, you may schedule an appointment by calling 612.668.3715.

Grades 1-8:

The first day of school for grades 1-12 is Monday, August 28, 2017.

If your child is a current Minneapolis Public Schools student, but will attend a new school for the 2017-18 school year, you will need to complete registration at the assigned school, and ensure that your child’s immunizations are up to date. Your new school will send you information about specific dates and instructions for completing registration.

If your child is new to Minneapolis Public Schools you will need to complete registration at the assigned school and present the following documents:

  • Record of birth date: Birth certificate, passport, baptismal record or other official document.
  • Record of immunizations: Call HotShots at 612.668.0870 for an appointment.

Your new school will send you information about specific dates and instructions for completing registration.

If your child is new to Minneapolis Public Schools you will need to complete registration and present the following documents to the school:

  • Record of birth date: Birth certificate, passport, baptismal record or other official document.

Waitlists

If your child was placed on a waitlist for a Minneapolis Public School, please note that the waitlists for the 2017-18 school year will expire September 30, 2017. With the exception of students who have siblings who currently attend the desired school, and students who are waiting for a seat in one of MPS’ High Five programs; those students will remain on an active waitlist throughout the remainder of the 2017-18 school year. Waitlists do not carry over from one school year to the next, and there are no waitlists for high schools.

The Enrollment and Student Placement Office monitors enrollment on a daily basis, and recalibrates the placement system every 7-10 days.  Our goal is to contact families, affirm their interest in a chosen school, and move students from the waitlist 1-2 days after each system recalibration takes place.  If a seat becomes available, Student Placement Services will contact families via telephone and U.S. mail to gauge continued interest, and to make a school assignment. We encourage families to respond within 72 hours of receiving correspondence in order to receive priority waitlist placement.

High School Appeal Process

There is no waiting list for high school placement; if you would like to appeal a high school placement decision for the 2017-18 school year, please complete an appeal form at http://highschoolrequest.mpls.k12.mn.us/appeals.html.

Appeals must be received on or before April 15, 2017.
