Accepting Requests Year Round!

Accepting Requests Year Round!

Families looking for a new school for the 2018-19 school year are now able to complete an enrollment request. Requests can be completed online or using a paper request form

Do I need to request a school?

You should request a school if:

  • Your child will be attending a new school next year (for example, because your child is finishing grade 8 this year and will be entering High School as a grade 9 student next year)
  • Your child would like to switch schools next year
Students currently enrolled in a Pre-K–5 school who live in that school’s attendance zone will automatically be assigned to that school’s pathway middle school unless another school is requested.

What resources are available to help me choose a school?

Minneapolis Public Schools offers schools and programs designed to meet the needs of all students. Our programs are designed to give students a strong education regardless of their learning style or background.

The MPS School Guide provides information about schools in each of the district's three attendance zones and information about student programs and services. The school guide is available online in English, Hmong, Somali and Spanish. Paper versions of the guide are available at the Student Placement Center and at schools.

How many schools can I request?

Some MPS schools may not have space available to accept all students who listed them as a top preference. List more than one school on your form to increase your likelihood of enrolling in a school of your choice.

Families can request up to two schools for grades Pre-K–8 and up to three schools for grades 9–12.

How do I request a school?

We encourage families to request a school online, but paper forms are also available.

To request a school online:

If your student will be entering high school (grades 9, 10, 11, 12) next year, you can request a high school at highschoolrequest.mpls.k12.mn.us.

If your student will be entering other grades (Pre-K through 8), you should request a school at schoolrequest.mpls.k12.mn.us.

How will I know if my school's start and end times are changing next year?

Twenty schools have been identified for changing their bell times starting the fall of 2018; please see the list of schools.

As changes to bell times were being considered, the goal was to minimize to the greatest extent possible the negative effects on families and staff.

As a result, the goal was to keep the change in bell times to within an hour of the original start and end times as much as possible. For 16 out of the 20 schools affected, bell times changes were within the hour with some schools only changing by 5 minutes on one end of the spectrum and 4 schools stretching the 60-minute change to 70 minutes.
